Coastal Maine Knitting Retreat 2026

The History and Technique of Bohus Knitting

Join us for the Coastal Maine Knitting Retreat, an enriching four-day experience dedicated to the art of knitting from February 26 to March 1, 2026.

This year, our focus is on the fascinating history and technique of Bohus knitting. Starting out as relief work for the unemployed families of quarry workers in Bohuslän, Sweden and reaching its height in popularity from 1939 to 1969, it remains a symbol of quality and high fashion. Since its resurgence in the 1990s, it has become increasingly popular with many ‘Bohus-inspired’ patterns available as well as kits based on the originals through Angora Garnet in Sweden. Throughout the retreat, you will learn to knit (and often purl) with more than two colors per round (often 4 or 5)—while making a lined cowl. You will also master other essential skills such as short-row shaping and mattress stitch necessary in the making of a true authentic Bohus garment. And what a great way to lead into our May 2026 Tour to Sweden, and to visit Bohuslän itself where you can purchase your own original Bohus knitting kits!

In addition to daily classes, participants will also have the opportunity to engage in two-hour afternoon workshops on select days.

Our classes will take place at the lovely Harraseeket Inn in Freeport, Maine, where participants can enjoy both community and comfort. We have reserved rooms at a discounted rate for those wishing to stay with our talented instructors, Marci, Kelly, Donna and Andra, at the Inn. For more details about accommodations and scheduling, please refer to the Retreat Details page. And as in the past, the lovely Elegant Ewe Knit Shop will be in attendance for your shopping pleasure!

The Coastal Maine Knitting Retreat promises to be an inspiring gathering for knitters of all skill levels, blending craftsmanship with the richness of the Bohus tradition in a picturesque coastal setting.
