Overview of Trip
Shetland Wool Week 2024 Tour is our 7th trip to Shetland; it's a 13-day tour centered around Glasgow. It is what we like to call a hybrid tour-adventure. We begin the tour in a classic way -- we spend 4 days on a fully-guided tour of many of the wonderful venues around Glasgow and Dundee. For the full itinerary, go to Itinerary page.
We will be staying at two different hotels, the Raddison Blu Hotel in Glasgow and the Hotel Indigo in Dundee. After our exploration of the Glasgow/Dundee areas, we will continue our adventure when we board the overnight ferry for Lerwick in the Shetland Islands.
There, our adventure truly begins. There is so much to do and see, so many classes to take, so many shops to visit and so many choices of interesting activities planned during Wool Week that we didn’t want to make those choices for folks and go everywhere as a group.
The Wool Week portion of the tour is designed by each person who is attending. We suggest that we all attend the opening ceremony together, but after that folks will be going in different directions. We will keep you posted as to when Shetland Wool Week membership and classes become available. We recommend that you sign up for their newsletter to keep abreast of what's being planned for Wool Week 2024; you can also catch a glimpse of what was offered on previous years' schedules of events.
While in Shetland we will be staying in lovely, self-catering homes in or near the heart of Lerwick. Most of the homes are within easy walking distance of downtown, the ocean, and many of the Wool Week activities, but some homes are a short drive away. Due to this, we will give registration preference for those homes to those who will be renting cars. Many Wool Week events take place in venues throughout the islands and transportation is not always offered by Wool Week; this is another good reason to rent a car. However, there is public transportation (buses) and taxis are readily available if you prefer to not rent your own car.
We will provide food for continental-style breakfasts in your homes for you. If you want any special foods or to make any meals on your own, you have the freedom to do so in well-equipped kitchens. Our tour-adventure allows you to decide which is more important – shopping or eating! Some of us will likely want to sample the local cuisine at restaurants and some of us will prefer to eat-in or a combination -- our self-catering model allows you the freedom to decide.
